Metal Surface Treatment

Unlike heat treatments, which act on the material’s microstructure, surface treatments act on the outer layer of components, making them more resistant to wear and, in some cases, improving their aesthetic finish.

Many components intended for outdoor use, such as agricultural machinery or port equipment, are exposed to rain, wind, sunlight and salt spray. Metal surface treatments protect these materials against corrosion, oxidation and deterioration.

At Stami Srl, collaboration with partners is essential. It is thanks to their support that we are able to guarantee high-quality chemical, electrochemical or electrolytic surface treatments, protecting the material’s surface without altering the structure or dimensions of the component. These include:

  • Zinc plating: the material is coated with a layer of zinc that protects the surface against corrosion.

  • Nickel plating: the metal is coated with a layer of nickel-phosphorus alloy, applied either via an electrolytic process or through chemical treatment. The aim is to protect the material from wear, oxidation and corrosion, improve hardness, reduce friction and ensure uniformity.

  • Anodising: an electrochemical process that forms a protective oxide layer on the metal, both for aesthetic purposes and to increase its resistance.

  • Phosphating: a chemical treatment that acts on the material’s surface and involves immersing the component in a phosphate-rich solution (zinc, iron or manganese). Applied to the surface, these phosphates make the material more resistant to corrosion and environmental agents.

  • Painting: this treatment creates a protective surface layer on metals, protecting them from environmental agents and corrosion.

  • GEOMETⓇ treatment: through spraying or immersion, the material is coated with a protective layer based on zinc and aluminium, giving it a silver colour. The advantage of this treatment is increased resistance and a reduced risk of corrosion, without weakening or deformation.

Advantages of surface treatments

  • Reduced wear and friction

Surface treatments strengthen the outer layer of the component, reducing wear and friction and ensuring long-lasting, high-performance parts.

  • Resistance to environmental conditions

These chemical and physical processes apply a protective layer to components, shielding them from water, sunlight, wind, salt spray, sand and temperature fluctuations.

  • Improved aesthetic finish

Treating the surface of the component ensures a uniform, high-quality finish with a professional appearance that is less prone to dirt build-up.
