Mechanical Metal Grinding

Grinding is a technique based on controlled material removal by abrasion, with the aim of producing an even smoother, more regular and well-defined surface, often as a finishing stage after other machining operations.

The process is carried out using an abrasive wheel mounted on a spindle, which rotates at very high speed, coming into contact with the workpiece and removing small amounts of material from the surface. The level of precision is extremely high, making it suitable for industrial sectors that require very tight tolerances, reliability and safety.

At STAMI, we rely on trusted partners to carry out grinding operations, selecting the most suitable solution for each project. Each process is performed using state-of-the-art CNC grinding machines, ensuring compliance with design specifications.

When Mechanical Grinding Is Needed

Grinding is a finishing operation: it is used on parts that have already been machined on a lathe or milling machine when very low surface roughness and tight dimensional and geometric tolerances are required, even on hard materials such as hardened steels. It is typically used, for example, on shafts, pins, bearing seats, and gear profiles.

The Main Types of Grinding

  • Cylindrical grinding, for external and internal surfaces: processes cylindrical, conical, or shaped surfaces, such as shafts, pins, and holes.
  • Centerless grinding: suitable for long, thin, or small workpieces that cannot be clamped between the spindle and tailstock; the workpiece is supported between two grinding wheels and a support blade.
  • Surface Grinding: Machines flat surfaces using a tangential or face grinding wheel.

Together with our partners, we select the type of grinding process best suited to your component.

The Difference Between Milling and Grinding

Milling removes material using a rotating tool equipped with cutting edges and is used to shape the workpiece. Grinding, on the other hand, uses an abrasive wheel, removes very small amounts of material, and brings the surface and dimensions to their final precision; for this reason, it is usually performed after turning or milling.

Advantages of metal grinding

  • High level of precision

Grinding produces consistent, uniform surfaces suitable for industries requiring extreme reliability.

  • High repeatability

Grinding makes it possible to achieve smooth surfaces and consistent dimensions, ideal for both single-part and series production.

  • Preservation of structural integrity

The use of coolants during the process reduces the risk of overheating and material deformation.
